Surf for More MathLesson 4 - Translating Shapes on Grids
To encourage your child to have fun on the Web while learning about Translating Shapes on Grids, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs. GoalIdentify the rule for translating a shape. Builds UponStudent Book pages 390-391
Instructions for UseTranslations prompts your child to experiment with translations, to recognize the two-dimensional shape after a translation, and identify the rule for translating a shape. To use Translations, click the 'Translation' button. Click and drag the original image and watch movements of the translated shape. Move the left and right, and up and down sliders to observe the changing coordinates of the image.
TransmoGrapher 2 lets your child practice skills at translation and plot basic shapes on the Cartesian coordinate system. To use TransmoGrapher 2, input the number of units in the text box to translate on the X-axis and on the Y-axis. Click the 'Translate' button. Notice when a translation is redrawn in its new position and orientation, a 'ghost' polygon is drawn in grey in the previous position. To create a new polygon, input the number of vertices for the new polygon in the text box 'How many vertices?', and click the 'Go' button. Enter the coordinates for X and Y. Click the 'Finished' button. The new polygon will be drawn on the coordinate plane. |
